LOW CARBON ECONOMY - BUSINESS OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGEShttp://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2010-03/video-link-discussion.aspx2010-03-19T11:03:00http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2010-03/video-link-discussion.aspxClimate change is a fact. Tackling it requires, among other things, a transition to a low carbon economy. In times of economic crisis, what are the challenges for businesses to adopt environmental policies?

Discover how companies are taking up the opportunities brought by climate change through innovative green solutions, which lead to the growth of their business.

World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the global nature conservation organisation, will present case studies of leading international companies which have managed to cut significantly their CO2 emissions without sacrificing their profitability or competitive edge.

The video link discussion will feature:

• Welcome notes by H.E. Robin Barnett, British Ambassador to Romania, H.E. Steve Williams, British Ambassador to Bulgaria, and Tony Buckby, Director, British Council Bulgaria;

• Introduction by Luminita Tanasie, Programme Manager, WWF Danube-Carpathian Programme Romania;

Theory of Evolution and Religion: Coexistence or Conflict ?http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2010-03/darwin-debate.aspx2010-03-09T13:32:00http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2010-03/darwin-debate.aspxIn 2009, the British Council marked the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin's work 'On the Origin of Species'. The events dedicated to that important moment in the history of civilization were conducted in the United Kingdom and other countries around the world.

In Romania, the debate "Theory of Evolution and Religion: Coexistence or Conflict?" is part of the Darwin Now international project organised by the British Council.

The venue is the Romanian Cultural Institute in Bucharest. Panellists of the debate are Romanian and British experts in science, philosophy, and theology. They will debate whether the theory of evolution and religion may coexist or not.

John Hedley Brooke, Mircea Flonta, Octavian Popescu, Radu Preda and Constantin Necula are the debate panel members.

The event is moderated by the TV editor, Cristian Tabără.

Science and journalism – friend or foe?http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2009-12/cafe.aspx2009-12-15T07:36:00http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2009-12/cafe.aspxWe do not know precisely the benefits of drinking coffee to our health but we are seeing the value that science and technology brings to the world. Do we really need to communicate science? Who is suppossed to be responsible?

We are about to end a very scientific year. 2009 was the Darwin Year and the International Year of Astronomy, and also the year of the British Council's Beautiful Science project. All of them have in common the hard job of communicating science to the public. Who are the science communicators, who are science journalists, how can we speak about communication without having the media involved. A quick look on how science is represented in the media rise the question: science and journalism are friends or foes? We are trying to find an answer and that is the aim of the science cafe.

logo British CouncilThe event is dedicated to the interested public of all ages, scientists, students, teachers, educators, communicators and journalists. There will be short presentations, discussions, live dialogues with partners from UK and Greece. Science cafe starts at 1300 hours.

A broad spectrum of topics are to be discussed such as science communication made by actors and celebrities, science journalism, communicating astronomy to the public, love, science and religion, and science around Christmas. A British Council global project will be presented.

Friends of the Science Newspaper interested in attending the science cafe have to send an email to the editor and explain in a few words their interest in participating at the event. Please, send the email no later than Thursday, December 17, 2009, 1300 hours.

The languages of the science cafe are Romanian, English, and Greek.

The event is moderated by Catalin Mosoia, science journalist.

This project is funded by the British Council's Beautiful Science programme in Southeast Europe.

“The Public Face of Space”http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2009-07/isu.aspx2009-07-17T00:55:00http://www.sciencenewspaper.eu/events/2009-07/isu.aspxFor the first time in the history of these annual events, ISU is dedicating the entire three-day symposium to education and outreach.

Space can function as an excellent educational thrust, not only to understand the world around us but also as a tool to lay the foundations of knowledge in training the younger generation. In this sense education serves in developing the full human potential of the broader population, not just attracting young people into studying mathematics and science for the nation's technical and economic benefit.

Education touches the solutions to so many world problems that the Call for Papers should be read as a call for innovative ideas far beyond what most people see today as the role of education and the roles of space in supporting it and benefiting from it. To this end we wish to attract a strong participation of people from the world of education and outreach alongside our regular support from the space sector.

Deadline for abstracts is October 2, 2009.

Authors will be notified by October 28, 2009.

The preliminary program will be ready by the end of the year.

Deadline for Early Registration is January 22, 2010.
