GIS1 is a single-chamber system simulating the human
gastrointestinal tract. It was developed by Lecturer Dr. Emanuel
Vamanu, in order to test in laboratory certain categories of
products, without involving human subjects or laboratory
animals.
Thus, probiotic, prebiotic and synbiotic products can be tested;
functional products to prevent disease and improve human health;
testing the viability of microbial strains with probiotic effect
during human gastrointestinal transit; the effect of these strains
on the simulated colon microbiota.
GIS1 can be used in two phases, in the same configuration:
Phase 1: Transit simulation through
stomach and small intestine;
Etapa 2: Transit simulation through
colon.
GIS systems (GIS1 and GIS2 - which simulate the human colon in
three phases) are developed in the laboratories of the Faculty of
Biotechnology of the University of Agronomic Sciences and
Veterinary Medicine Bucharest, Romania. Systems were realised by
Lecturer Dr. Emanuel Vamanu.
It is worth noted that GIS1 invention was awarded at the recent
edition of 2011 INVENTIKA youth salon. For more details click
