The 1st Europlanet Prize for Excellence in Public Engagement with Planetary Science

The first Europlanet Prize for Excellence in Public Engagement with Planetary Science has been awarded to Dr Jean Lilensten of the Laboratoire de Planétologie de Grenoble, France. He will be presented with his award of 4000 Euros at the European Planetary Science Congress 2010, which will take place at the Angelicum Centre – Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, Rome, Italy, from 19 – 24 September 2010.

TWAS Prizes 2010

The "TWAS Prizes" are awarded to individual scientists in developing countries in recognition of outstanding contributions to knowledge in eight fields of science: biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, agricultural sciences, earth sciences, engineering sciences and medical sciences. Nominations for the 2010 prizes must be submitted by 31 March 2010. Each prize consists of 15,000 US dollars and is accompanied by a plaque inscribed with the recipient's major contributions.

“Cell Side Story”, three minutes of love inside the cell

Students at Atkins Academic and Technology High School in cooperation with Wake Forest University and other community partners developed a new animated film called "Cell Side Story". It is a love story featuring male and female animated characters that dramatize what happens within cells. Kenny Twist represents kinesin, a motor protein found within cells. The DNA girl is DNA, the nucleic acid that tells the cells what to do. The musical video is designed to teach the basics of biotechnology.

Noise from road traffic in inhabited areas can increase the risk of heart attacks

People who live in areas with high levels of noise caused by road traffic may be more prone to heart attacks than people who live in quiet regions. At least so claim researchers from Karolinska Institutet who developed the scientific study in the Stockholm area. The study compared more than 1500 Swedes between the years 1992-1994 who had suffered a heart attack. At the same time, recorded measurements of noise levels for the past 20 years and the degree of air pollution were also taken into account.

Galileo celebrates his 445th Birthday during the International Year of Astronomy 2009

Galileo will celebrate his 445th birthday on the 15th February 2009. In recognition of the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei’s first celestial observations using the telescope, 2009 has been designated the International Year of Astronomy. NASA’s Great Observatories – the Hubble Space Telescope, Spitzer Space Telescope, and Chandra X-Ray Observatory – are collaborating to produce spectacular multi-wavelength views of our universe.
