TWAS Prizes 2010

The "TWAS Prizes" are awarded to individual scientists in developing countries in recognition of outstanding contributions to knowledge in eight fields of science: biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, agricultural sciences, earth sciences, engineering sciences and medical sciences. Nominations for the 2010 prizes must be submitted by 31 March 2010. Each prize consists of 15,000 US dollars and is accompanied by a plaque inscribed with the recipient's major contributions.

Alin Totorean continues expedition after safely passing through the first 135km of the Australian desert

Australia is confronted with numerous fires caused by the intense heat without precedent which is affecting the continent. Temperatures in the south of the country exceeding 45 degrees in the shade have claimed many victims. Meanwhile, floods have covered the northern coast of Australia. In this context, bordered by fire and water, Romanian explorer Alin Totorean has managed to complete his first 135 kilometres (about 84 miles) of his expedition across the Australian desert.
