Nominations for the 2010 prizes must be submitted by 31 March 2010. Each prize consists of 15,000 US dollars and is accompanied by a plaque inscribed with the recipient's major contributions.

Temperatures in the south of the country exceeding 45 degrees in the shade have claimed many victims. Meanwhile, floods have covered the northern coast of Australia. In this context, bordered by fire and water, Romanian explorer Alin Totorean has managed to complete his first 135 kilometres (about 84 miles) of his expedition across the Australian desert.
