Why ?
It is for the first time that the International Congress of
Mathematicians (ICM) is being held in India. About 3,000 delegates
are expected to be present at the event.
The Fields Medal, the most prestigious global award for
mathematical achievement, and three other prizes will be awarded,
including one that will be given for the first time at 2010 ICM,
the Chern Prize for outstanding life-long contributions to
mathematics. All of them will be given away by Shrimati Pratibha
Patil, the Honourable President of India.
These are the Nevanlinna Prize for work on
mathematical aspects of computer science (named after Rolf Herman
Nevanlinna, a famous Finnish mathematician), the Gauss
prize for mathematical work that has had practical
applications of great import (named after the German mathematician
Carl Friedrich Gauss, one of the greatest names in mathematics of
all time) and, the Chern prize (named after the Chinese
mathematician Shiing Shen Chern, one of the greatest geometers of
the 20th Century).
